How To Use The Image Galleries
(You have two)
 - If this is your personal gallery, your name will appear in the gallery title of the Media Manager page as your Gallery. You can add images, videos, and descriptive information that other members can view.
Please read these instructions before you start uploading!
- You also have an Uploads gallery. It contains images used for avatars and other files, such as material you wish to have included on the website. Any files you attach to an email also land here. Instructions for creating avatars are available from a help button in the Uploads Gallery
- If you are a site administrator, you can maintain the content of site galleries as well.
- Adding images is easy. Click on the grey Choose Files button to open Windows Explorer or Mac File Finder on your computer. Navigate to the files you want to upload and select them. You can upload multiple files, but only from one folder at a time. If you want to upload files from different folders, you must do so in separate uploads. Many things can go wrong when uploading files over the internet, so it is prudent to upload smaller batches rather than a dozen files at a time. There is a 500 MB limit on each upload.
- Once you have selected the file(s) you want to add to your gallery, click on the "Upload Selected" button to copy them to your gallery. The resulting thumbnails display a little box showing the the number of cumulative views. They also contain controls to enable you to add information that will appear when the image is displayed in the gallery viewer.
- Hover over the thumbnail to see the embedded controls. You can do several things from the thumbnail. Clicking on it will display the associated image or video in a lightbox with viewing controls. You can use your mouse wheel and left mouse button to manipulate the size and position of the image. Clicking on the little trash can will let you delete the file. Clicking on the pencil icon in the upper left of the thumbnail will display the Edit Details page where you can add or update information such as the Contributor, Title, etc. The Category and Subcategory tags reside in a single site-wide library and are intended to help with upcoming search features, so please pick one from the dropdown list - don't create any new ones just yet. Some thumbnails, particularly portrait-oriented ones from phones will need to be rotated. You can do this in 90º increments by clicking on the Rotate until it displays correctly. The click on Save Changes. Always save changes you make before returning to the gallery. Back in the gallery, you should see the thumbnail displayed the way you set it.
- File Names:File Names: Though not directly visible, the names of your images and videos are used to identify each one for editing and presentation. Avoid using these characters in file names. # % & { } < > * ? $ ! ' + ` " : @ | = ' , / ( ) one or more periods and spaces. Parentheses are particularly nasty. Although file names are processed by a "cleaner", those with particularly creative names may upload OK but they will cause errors when displayed. The underscore _ is used to replace the gremlins, so it is a good character to use for making file names legible. In any case, the name you give your files will be used to generate a default caption and that's what members will see when viewing your gallery. You can change the caption to anything you like to describe your image or video.
- Guidelines for Images: JPG and PNG files work best for viewing. For faster loading, try to keep file sizes under 5 MB since images are not compressed. Avoid .BMPs. They are large and slow. .TIFFs cannot be uploaded. Other file types (such as documents, spreadsheets and PDFs) cannot yet be uploaded but support for them is in the works. Relevance and taste is assumed. Only your personal gallery can be viewed by other members.
- Guidelines for Video Files: File sizes are limited and once uploaded, processing takes some time. The first time you upload a video file, VideoLan® image processing software will be cached onto your computer. If you have the VLC video player installed, these "plugins" are already on board. Having this software on your machine will significantly decrease the time needed to process subsequent video uploads. Please be patient and wait for the "Stand By" spinner to stop (it is actually monitoring the upload process). This can take several minutes for larger files. Mp4s are usually a safe bet for uploading. For simplicity, all video uploads are converted and compressed to the .mp4 video format anyway. You may occasionally receive a cryptic error message during uploading. Use the back-arrow on your browser to reload the dashboard page, then exit and reload the gallery. You should see thumbnails of your newly uploaded images. A black thumbnail indicates problems although the image can probably still be viewed. Use the site feedback email to let me know and I'll fix it. This scheme should work on all PCs and Macs with Intel capability.
- File Management: Your files are your responsibility. They should be relevant to the spirit of the website. The number of views is displayed on each thumbnail when you're in the management dashboard of your gallery. If they're not getting any views, consider deleting them to save space and reduce administrative overhead. In every respect, remember that size matters - smaller is faster...
